Acrylic on canvas. 20 x 30 inches.

As we approach the tenth anniversary of the Syrian crisis (March 2021), I have decided to produce a series of pieces reflecting key events in the war. In 2014, I published a peer reviewed journal article on the crisis in the International Journal of Human Rights and you could say that Syria has weighed heavy on my mind for nearly a decade.

Although there have been many allegations of the Syrian regime using chemical weapons throughout the crisis, this piece attempts to capture August 21st, 2013. The large scale use of chemicals led to over 1000 people dying. We will never know the real number. Reports of blurred eyes and suffocation were widespread.

The series is intended to raise awareness of key milestones within the war and any money raised will be donated to the UNHCR Syria appeal.

Syria: August 21, 2013 (completed June 2020)
